My favorite Turkish word is ‘Komshu’ (Neighbor). That word comes with so much warmth and comfort, despite the pain and trauma that exists between Bulgaria and Turkey. Our plate ware, architecture, cuisine, culture, music, and language, was shaped by the 500 year Ottoman occupation. The olive branch symbolizes peace and hope in the Mediterranean region, resonating with communities from central Asia to Europe. Olive trees are strong and resilient, able to survive seemingly impossible conditions. I think about the dove bringing an olive branch to Noah when it was time to step foot on land again and build community after the turbulent flood.
