The story of Selene and Endymion is a fragmented one by the time it was discovered by historians. At a high-level, Selene, infatuated by the beauty of a Shepherd (Endymion), begged Zeus to help preserve his beauty. Zeus put Endymion into an eternal slumber so that Selene could always gaze upon his beauty and Endymion would never die.
Some believe this is the personification of the relationship between the moon and sleep. Some interpret this as a warning against lustful obsession and the desire to own another’s body.
This cave, however, is the real cave in Bulgaria called the Prohodna Cave (nicknamed the Eyes of God… for obvious reasons)
