In anticipation of spring, we celebrate Granny March (баба Марта) in Bulgaria. We create white and red string dolls and tie the twisted thread to our friend’s wrists and on trees outside on March 1st. By the end of March, many of these strings are ready to fall of the trees as buds begins to bloom. The white string represents the fertility of Spring and the red represents prosperity in the new year. Birch trees are also very nostalgic for many Eastern Europeans. The tree is heavily referenced in Russian literature and art. Some even believe in its protective powers and its ability to bring good fortune.
