In anticipation of spring, Bulgarians celebrate Granny March (баба Марта). We create white and red string dolls and tie the twisted thread to our friend’s wrists and on trees outside on March 1st. By the end of March, many of these strings are ready to fall of the trees as buds begins to bloom. The white string represents the fertility of Spring and the red represents prosperity in the new year. It is custom to exchange Martenichki (red and white string bracelets and handmade string dolls) to your closest friends and family .
